What You Need To Know About Traffic Violations and Points

Impact on Insurance Rates

If this is not your first traffic violation, check with your auto insurance agency to see how it will affect your rates. Getting a certain number of tickets can cause your premium to increase. Moving violations, like speeding, usually do impact insurance rates. However, in certain states, non-moving violations, such as parking tickets, will not make your rates go up.

Driver’s License Points

In the case of driver’s license points, 0 points is the best. Each moving traffic violation results in the addition of points to your driving record, and the amount of points you receive depends on what the ticket is for. If you accumulate a certain number of points, you could lose your license and see your insurance rates rise. The guidelines are even stricter for minors.

Removing Points

There are ways to subtract points from your driving record and bring your insurance rates back down. Keeping a spotless driving record for a specified amount of time is one way of erasing points. Another way is to take classes from an accredited traffic school. This is an easy and affordable way to reinforce your knowledge about traffic laws and decrease insurance costs and points on your record.

Ticket Dismissal

It is possible to have your ticket dismissed, especially if you have a clean driving record. You can attend your court date to dispute the ticket, or you may be able to write a letter to the district attorney who is assigned to your case. Even if you are successful, know that the points might stay on your record, or you may still have to pay the fine.

As a person who is new at driving, being caught by a traffic police for a violation is something I fear. I need more practice and also need to understand all traffic signs. Buti ka siguro, sis, magaling ka na magdrive. :))
