As a parent any emergency involving our children is a nightmare scenario and you should be prepared in the eventuality that something like this occurs so that you know what to do. The first thing that you should make sure that you do not panic and keep calm. You can look for information through a quick search online, as there are lots of sites containing a lot of pertinent information. Below is a summary of some of the dental emergencies that may occur and what you should do about them.

A Knocked-Out Tooth
If your child knocks out one of their teeth, you should first ensure that there are no other physical injuries and if you need to call emergency services for help. If it is a permanent or an adult tooth, you should place this in some milk to help preserve it and keep the tooth moist and rinse the mouth out with warm salty water. If the tooth is a baby tooth, then there is no need to keep this in milk, but in either case, you should bring the tooth to your emergency dentist as quickly as possible. If it is out of hours and your dentist is not available, you can find a dentist on the Gold Coast offering emergency services using the internet with ease.

A Cracked Tooth
Whether the tooth is a baby or adult tooth, you should rinse the mouth out immediately with warm salty water to clean the mouth. You will also want to apply a cold compress or ice pack to prevent any swelling or help reduce it, and you should see your dentist at the earliest possible opportunity.

A Bitten Tongue Or Lip
Although it can be a painful experience, a bitten tongue or lip is not usually bad enough to warrant a trip to the emergency dentist and is something that you can treat at home. First, you will want to rinse the mouth out with warm saltwater and apply a cold compress to the lip, and if the problem is the tongue, an ice cube held in the mouth may help to reduce swelling. If the problem does persist, then book an appointment to see your dentist.

Toothache
If your child is suffering from a toothache, you will want first to ensure that all particles are removed from between the teeth using floss, and then rinse the mouth out with warm salty water. There are treatments that you can get from your pharmacist that may help to relieve the condition, and you should book an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can if the problem persists.

A dental emergency can happen at any time and hopefully if you experience one it will be when your dentist is open. If it is not, do not panic and remain calm, if you need help from the emergency services, call them, and if in doubt, call your emergency dentist and get professional advice. Keeping calm and making sure you do not panic will help you to keep your child calm and get them the best treatment as quickly as possible.
