The Importance of Independence- And How You Can Gain More

Want to boost your self esteem and become more independent? Maybe you’re a young adult starting out on your own for the first time, or perhaps you’re a little older, coming out of a relationship (or some kind of rut) and wanting to make changes. Either way, here are some great ways to go about it.

Become financially independent
Becoming financially independent as you reach adulthood is so important. It doesn't mean you need to have the best job in the world or massive amounts of savings since that’s not always realistic for everyone to achieve. But you should be able to afford your own bills and budget your money so that you can cover everything you need. Being financially independent and not having to rely on anyone else for money puts you in the best position in life and can boost your self esteem.

Live alone
Living alone can be one of the best experiences of your adult life as it teaches you so much. You really have to learn to stand on your own two feet and look after yourself, take responsibility for yourself, get organised and learn new skills. Many people end up living alone after family or relationship breakdown and see it as a negative thing, but it shouldn’t be viewed that way. Living alone lets you work out who you truly are because you have no one to answer to but yourself.

Learn to drive
Driving is a skill which is so worth learning, as being able to get around gives you so much independence. Whether it’s for work or for social reasons, public transport won’t always run at the times and to the locations that you need, plus it’s time consuming. Ride apps like Uber can become expensive if you’re using them all the time or go on long trips. See driving as an investment in yourself, a skill that you’re learning to better your life. Find a way to budget the money for lessons, and if you’re nervous about getting behind the wheel, try meditation but also be aware that your confidence will pick up over time. Any car accident lawyers will tell you that many accidents can be avoided when you drive carefully and safely the way you’re taught on your lessons- so don’t let fear hold you back.

Travel solo
Travelling to a new part of the world and learning to navigate your way around can be tricky but rewarding, if you want to build up your independence this is a fantastic and fun way to go about it. You’ll of course want to stay safe and follow traveler advice such as not venturing into dangerous neighborhoods alone, but for the most part, solo travel in areas that tourists visit will be very safe. If you can get around in a foreign country where everything is different and you don’t even speak the language then you’ll come home feeling like you can achieve anything.
