7 Things to Do in Thailand for a Cultural Experience

Thailand has become one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia, and it is not difficult to see why. From the temples and beaches to the vibrant Full Moon parties, there is something for everyone. To get a true taste of Thailand while visiting, here are some of the best cultural experiences to enjoy…
  1. Visit a floating market - The floating markets in Thailand are world famous. Here you will find a huge number of boats that are covered in everything from tropical fruits and flowers to meat and other fresh produce. You get a real feel for what daily life used to be like, and a visit to Thailand is simply incomplete without experiencing a floating market for yourself.

  1. Enjoy a yoga retreat - We all go on vacation to relax and unwind, and there is no better place for this than Thailand. One of the best ways to find your inner calm is to give Chiang Mai yoga a try. Chiang Mai is a stunning, old city, with beautiful surroundings. There are a number of yoga retreats in the area, which allow you to practice traditional exercise and meditating while ensuring you feel refreshed and revitalised.
  2. Experience the ancient ruins and national parks - One of the great things about Thailand is how diverse the landscape is. The national parks in the country are renowned for their scale and beauty. A lot of the spots also offer biking and hiking trails, and there are some incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites too.
  3. Take a trip to Kanchanaburi - If you really want to learn about Thailand and embrace the culture, a trip to Kanchanaburi is a must. This is a place with a dark past. You will find the bridge over the River Kwai and the start of the infamous Death Railway. Both were constructed by prisoners of war and are haunting relics from World War Two.

  1. Visit the hill tribe villages - Karen, Hmong, Lisu, and Akha tribes are found across the north of Thailand. You can take a tour to these areas, which are away from the typical tourist trail, to find out about the tribe's’ way of life and the local family.
  2. Island hop – There are more than 5,000 miles of coastline that are just waiting to be explored in Thailand. Make sure you incorporate a few island trips into your vacation. There are so many incredible places to visit, from Ko Phi Phi Don to Phang Nga Bay. The latter is home to the limestone rocks that you have probably seen photographed a number of times before.
  3. Visit the Grand Palace – The Grand Palace, which is the residence of the Kings of Siam, is more than 200 years old, and it is arguably the most famous tourist destination in Bangkok. Of course, this means that it is often very busy, but it’s worth putting up with the hustle and bustle to experience the grandeur and complex history of Thailand.
