Prominent landmark in Washington, DC: Washington Monument. This 555ft obelisk stands as the centerpiece of the National Mall that honors America's first president, George Washington.
Designed by Robert Mills, the structure was completed in two phases of construction, one private (1848-1854) and one public (1876-1884). The monument is made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss. This tower is both the world's tallest predominantly stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk.
