Important Steps To Take After Moving Into Your New Home

If you’re planning to move home in the future then it can be a good idea to also have a plan of action for when the move has finished. It’s probably going to be a long and tiring process even if you manage to pull off a stress-free relocation with no troubles. However, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that the move isn’t completely over until you’ve settled in.

So in this post, we’re going to talk about a few important steps to take after you’ve moved into your new home.

Update your address with the relevant services

This is something that you should aim to do before you actually move. Make sure you let all of the relevant services know that you plan to move home soon and that you want to either relocate your services or cancel them on a specific date. You may want to give a few days of notice so that your utilities aren’t immediately cut, and you want to try and plan ahead so that utilities are installed correctly in your new home for when you arrive.

Contact the removals company and finalize the job

There’s a good chance that your removals company is going to request that you call them back after the job is finished to finalize the job. For example, if you’ve accidentally left something in their van or if you need to speak to them about follow-up services, then you should get in touch with them. However, if they finalize the order as soon as they put the last box into your new home, then you can typically skip this step.

Ensure your utilities are running

You should ideally check that your utilities are working fine before you actually move into your new home. You should make sure that the water, electricity and gas are working correctly before you settle down. Test all the taps, make sure the electricity is working, and ensure that any gas-related appliances are functioning as normal. If there’s a problem then you’ll want to get in touch with your utility company as soon as possible to see what the issue is and get it fixed as soon as possible.

Unpack your essential items unless you have a moving bag

It’s popular these days to pack a moving bag for when you confirm that you’re moving home. This can save you a lot of time and hassle because it means you don’t need to rummage through your boxes and suitcases to find your essentials. However, if you haven’t got a moving bag or there are some essentials that you packed away, make sure you unpack them as soon as possible. This can include bed sheets and pillows, toiletries, or even entertainment systems and computers.

Install a home security system as soon as possible

With most things out of the way, it’s time to focus on improving the security of your home. It’s extremely important that you install a home security system as soon as possible to protect everyone inside, but also to deter any local thieves that will no doubt have noticed you moving in. To them, you could be a brand-new target with weakened defences due to your recent move.
